The bi-monthly seminar of Fazl Ali College, Mokokchung was held on 12 October at FAC Conference Hall with Nukshimoa, Asst. Professor, Department of Physics as the resource person. Nukhimoa spoke on the topic “Electromagnetic Waves and the science of communication.”
In his paper, he talked about the concept of radio waves and how they are used for the purpose of communication in mobile phones, radio, television and in satellite navigation radars and microwave ovens. He elaborated on how communication takes place through electro-magnetic waves.
While explaining about the electro magnetic signal transmission from cellphone antenna, Nukshimoa mentioned that the increased used of cell phones has bought about various concerns including probable health hazards. Due to electro-magnetic radiation of cell phones heat is generated and the head temperature rises, he said.
“Experiments have shown how radiation penetrates the skull of an adult by 25%, 50% in 10-year-olds and 75% in 5-year-olds,” he stated. “The younger the child the deeper the penetration due to the fact that their skulls are thinner and their brain cells contain more fluid than adults,” he added. Further points on how certain measures and preventions can be made were discussed.
The seminar concluded with a Question-and-Answer session.
